Timberline Sunrise Majesty
February 2021 was a month to remember in the Pacific Northwest. It brought all sorts of exciting weather and boatloads of snow, especially in the mountains. At times the sun didn’t shine and mountains didn’t come into view for weeks. For several years I’d been waiting for the right opportunity and trying to capture an iconic image of the incredible historic Timberline Lodge with Mt Hood towering above in the background. The elements really came together this morning and couldn’t have been more perfect with loads of fresh snow and an eerily quiet sunny sunrise which illuminated Mt Hood, Timberline Lodge, and snow covered trees with gorgeous pink light. This was just one beautiful calm day in-between whiteout blizzard storms the days right before & after. I even found out the ski resort and lodge were closed this day and much of the week due to the power and water being knocked out from the storms, yikes!
The early wake up alarm, drive in the dark, bitterly cold temperatures (12 degrees), and trudge through deep snow all paid off to capture this stunning image of Mt Hood and Timberline Lodge at sunrise. This is a stitched panorama merged together from several different images, resulting in a finely detailed high resolution print that looks fantastic at large sizes.
Timberline Lodge was constructed in 1937 at an elevation of 6000 feet. It is a true marvel and gem of the Pacific Northwest and hosts almost 2 million visitors per year.
